COUNTIFS to exclude a list of criteria

I need to use COUNTIFS to count occurrences and excluding a few variables.

I have included a sample excel worksheet, so if example I got a table full of letters and I want to know what are the total number without a certain letter. I know to add a COUNTIFS criteria with a "<>"&"desired alphabet" but what if I need a dynamic list of alphabets to exclude from the counting.

I searched online and there was a mention of using NOT function and a VLOOKUP. Is it possible to cross marriage the two and use it in a COUNTIFS?

Any other solutions to this problem will be appreciated.

Thanks in advance excel gurus!

Hi,

an added on question, in the sample workbook I see that in order to use the array formula I need to create an index list?

Does that mean a normal list will not be able to be used to search?
