Create data model in Excel 2013

I have tried several times to create a pivot from a data model with no success. Am I linking the tables wrong? Simple example: Table one has Countries and their capitals, table two has the same country list and population. How do I do a pivot where the country in table one points to the matching population in table two? Looks like I am missing a basic step somewhere.

If I were doing it, I'd use either VLOOKUP or INDEX/MATCH to add the population data to your Table 1 in a new column.
